Extra Innings Rule

If the game is tied after the completion of 9 innings or after completion of an inning once the game has reached the 2.5-hour time limit, then the game will go to extra innings as follows:

The first extra inning will proceed according to International Tiebreaker Rules, which has each team batting with a runner on second base to start the inning.

If the game remains tied after the first extra inning, the teams will play another half inning in a “Sudden Death” format with three outs. Before the start of the inning, the manager of both teams will join the home plate umpire at home plate for a coin toss. The manager of the home team will choose heads or tails, and the umpire will toss the coin. The manager of the team that wins the coin toss will decide whether to play offense or defense. The offensive team will begin with a runner on first base (the batter that made the last out in the previous inning), and the offensive team will continue hitting with whoever was scheduled to hit next in the lineup. If the offensive team scores, the offensive team wins. If the offensive team doesn’t score, the defensive team wins.

Game Duration

USPBL 2.5 Rule

On July 12, 2018, The United Shore Professional Baseball League implemented a 2 hour and 30-minute time limit to its games. The USPBL is the first professional baseball organization to place time limits on games to help speed pace of play. Under the USPBL’s 2.5 rule, no new inning will begin after 2 hours and 30 minutes, and the team leading at the end of the inning after the time limit has been reached will be declared the winner.

In the event of a tied game at the time the 2.5-hour time limit has been reached, the USPBL will utilize its Extra Innings Rule as set forth in this FAQ document.

Weather

The USPBL has every intention of playing each game, even when the weather forecast may be calling for rain. Jimmy John’s Field’s playing surface includes state-of-the-art drainage in the outfield and an oversized tarp to cover the infield dirt. This combination allows the USPBL a great chance to play ball regardless of the amount of rain that might fall prior to a game. The Jimmy John’s Field grounds crew will be hard at work to maintain and prepare the field for each and every game. A decision to play, suspend, cancel, or postpone will NOT be made prior to the scheduled start time of any game, and a game’s start time will more likely be delayed before an official decision is made. This is done to allow for additional time to evaluate the weather forecast for the Utica area.

There is NO SET TIME for the cancellation or postponement of a game due to weather. Each weather situation is different and includes unique variables and circumstances. Anytime weather is an issue, we weigh factors that include the amount of rain the field has already absorbed and future forecasts, including likelihood of future rain, possible rain duration, and the severity of additional weather. The decision to cancel or postpone a game due to weather is made with these, and many other, factors in mind. The most important factor we consider is the safety of our fans and the players. When weather is an issue, we make decisions that are in the best interest of the majority of those with tickets. We understand that each fan with a ticket to a game also has unique circumstances. Weather, good or not, is a factor to consider with an outdoor entertainment option, such as USPBL baseball.

Please keep in mind weather forecasts in our area (TV and radio) are intended to cover an area of well over 100 square miles. We utilize multiple sources, including a professional weather service and radar, to pinpoint the weather at our specific location in downtown Utica to receive forecasts specific to our location. It may very well be raining at your house but be sunny with blue skies at the ballpark.

IF THE GAME DOES GET CANCELLED OR POSTPONED, WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

If the game is OFFICIALLY cancelled, postponed, or suspended, which means the game never started or we failed to complete an official game, please keep your ticket stubs with that game’s date. Rainout tickets may be used for a similar ticket location to a scheduled make-up or restart of a suspended game or may be exchanged for any remaining regular season USPBL game during this season at Jimmy John’s Field, based on availability. All tickets are based upon availability, and are valid for an equal, or lesser value, ticket. No full or partial refunds will be given for a difference in ticket price. Redeem your tickets early once you know what game you would like to attend in order to avoid that game being sold out.

In order for a ticket exchange to take place, if the tickets are electronic tickets, please call the Box Office at 248-759-5278 to make the exchange or email to boxoffice@uspbl.com. They will be contacted by a USPBL representative when the tickets are received.

If you choose not to attend the make-up game, your tickets from the cancelled, postponed, or suspended game need to be exchanged with our ticket box office for the new date.
