Mammoths Use Long Ball to Win Over Beavers, 10-3
UTICA, Mich. – Home Runs were flying for the Westside Woolly Mammoths (5-5) as they would defeat the Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers (2-8) in commanding fashion, 10-3, on a beautiful Thursday night at Jimmy John’s Field.
Birmingham is coming off of a 5-1 win over Westside in their last game, which would break a previous 7-game losing streak.
Jacob Pennington would start the game off striking out all three batters in order in the first. Birmingham would then reward the strong pitching with the first run of the game, off a Matt Piotrowski RBI single.
The Mammoths would not waste any time getting runs of their own on the board, loading the bases early in the second. Cordell Dunn Jr. would earn an RBI on a sac fly in his first USPBL at bat to bring Drew Fleming home, and Jose Cedeno would send a ground ball into the outfield for 2 RBI and a single, propelling the Mammoths to a 3-1 lead at the end of the second.
Francis Florentino would open the third inning with a 353-foot home run, followed by Colby Seltzer launching one 386 feet directly after to extend the Mammoth’s lead and bring the score to 5-1.
Piotrowski and Rafael Burgos would both pick up RBIs for the Beavers in the bottom of the third to tighten the game 5-3.
The close game would not last long, as the Mammoths would again have back-to-back hitters score home runs, with Fox Leum going deep, followed by Florentino’s second home run of the day. Two batters later, Fleming would also hit a home run, extending the Mammoth’s lead to six at the end of the fifth.
Florentino had a stellar game on the plate, batting 3-4, with a single and two HRs, while also tallying 3 RBIs.
