Unicorns Roll Past Diamond Hoppers, 11-0

UTICA, Mich. – The Utica Unicorns (18-13) jumped on the Eastside Diamond Hoppers (9-22) early and never looked back, cruising to an 11-0 victory in the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader at UWM Field. A seven-run outburst over the first two innings gave the Unicorns complete control, as they finished with 10 hits while holding Eastside to just two.
Utica wasted little time taking the lead, scoring once in the first before erupting for six runs in the second inning. The big blow came off the bat of third baseman Ryan Enos, who launched a grand slam and finished the game 2-for-2 with five RBIs and two runs scored. Alex Harrell reached base three times, scored three runs, and drove in another, while Joey Winters added a double and an RBI. Chris Schoeller Jr., Jason Givens, Zayd Brannigan, and Logan Sanders also contributed RBIs as the Unicorns’ offense produced 11 runs on 10 hits.
On the mound, Calvin Shepherd was dominant for Utica, tossing four hitless innings while striking out six to earn the win. Shepherd worked around five walks before turning things over to Dillon Fischer, who surrendered the Diamond Hoppers’ only two hits over the final two innings to complete the shutout. Together, the Unicorns’ pitching staff struck out seven batters.
Eastside was limited to singles from David Kedrow and Brendan Seman, as the Diamond Hoppers were unable to generate any sustained offense. The Unicorns also turned a key double play behind the infield combination of Brannigan, Meguiar, and Winters to keep the momentum firmly on their side.
