Unicorns Win Game One Over Beavers, 2-1
UTICA, Mich. – The Utica Unicorns (7-6) outhit the Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers (2-9) 8-2, paired with strong pitching en route to a 2-1 victory in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader at Jimmy John’s Field.
In the top of the first, the Unicorns loaded the bases, but Greg Loukinen pitched his team out of trouble and allowed no runs.
The Beavers would strike back by loading the bases in the bottom of the first, but a similar story would unfold as they too could not bring a runner home, and the inning would end scoreless.
A run was not scored until the fifth inning when Utica’s Patrick Baggett singled, and after two Beaver defensive errors, Andre Demetral scored.
Austin Ochoa hit an RBI single to put another run on the board for the Unicorns and gave Utica a 2-0 lead after the fifth inning.
The Beavers would not have a hit until the fifth inning, a Matt Piotrowski single. Moments later, Ray Hilbrich sent Piotrowski home on a single of his own to earn the RBI. No more runs would be scored, and the Unicorns would still have the 2-1 lead going into the sixth.
