UTICA, Mich. – The Westside Woolly Mammoths (10-5) used timely power hitting and a strong pitching performance to defeat the Utica Unicorns (9-8), 8-2, Thursday night at UWM Field.

After two scoreless innings, the Mammoths struck first in the third when second baseman Dante Morton launched a three-run home run to left field, giving Westside a 3-0 advantage. The Unicorns answered in the bottom half of the inning, cutting the deficit to one on a two-run single by Alex Harrell, who drove in Rafael Jackson III and Ryan Enos to make it 3-2.

Westside responded immediately with a run in the fourth before breaking the game open in the sixth. Designated hitter Jordan Viars led off the inning with a solo home run, and catcher Tommy Stevenson added another solo blast later in the frame to stretch the Mammoths’ lead to 7-2. An RBI double from Chase Jans and a seventh-inning insurance run completed the scoring as Westside finished with 12 hits and three home runs.

Morton led the Mammoths’ offense, finishing 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs, while Jans and Brendan Hillis each collected two hits.

The Unicorns managed five hits on the night. Harrell paced the offense by going 2-for-4 with both of Utica’s RBIs, while Jackson III, Zayd Brannigan, and Chris Schoeller Jr. each added a hit.

Westside starter Malik Abdul earned the win after allowing two runs over five innings before three relievers combined to toss four scoreless frames, surrendering just two hits while striking out four. Unicorns starter Coley Kilpatrick took the loss after allowing seven earned runs over 5.2 innings.

The Mammoths improved behind an offensive attack that featured 12 hits, while the Unicorns were held scoreless over the final six innings as Westside secured the 8-2 victory at UWM Field.
