
Strong Hitting Not Enough As Beavers Falls To Unicorns

UTICA, Mich. – Even though the Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers collected eight hits to the Utica Unicorns’s seven, they still fell 10-6 on Saturday. Ben Wilcoxson led Beavers with three hits.
Wilcoxson collected three hits in four at bats in the loss. Wilcoxson tripled in the first inning, singled in the third inning, and singled in the fourth inning.
Beavers opened the scoring in the first after Ryan Maka doubled, scoring one run.
Unicorns jumped into the lead in the top of the third when Andrew Valdez doubled, scoring two runs, Jared Weber hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run, and Chris Schoeller hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one run.
Beavers tied the game in the bottom of the third thanks to a single by Matt Piotrowski, a sacrifice fly by Maka, and an error.
Unicorns flipped the game on its head in the top of the fourth, scoring six runs on five hits to take the lead, 10-4. The biggest blow in the inning was a single by Joe Muzio that drove in two.
Choyce Diffey III started on the mound for Beavers. The starting pitcher allowed two hits and four runs over three innings, striking out three and walking five. Adam Berghorst began the game for Unicorns. The righty allowed eight hits and six runs (five earned) over three and two-thirds innings, striking out three and walking one.
Maka drove the middle of the lineup, leading Beavers with four runs batted in. The first baseman went 2-for-2 on the day.
Ryan Enos led Unicorns with two hits in four at bats from the leadoff position. Schoeller, Muzio, and Valdez each drove in two runs for Unicorns. Valdez led Unicorns with two walks. Overall, the team had a strong eye at the plate, accumulating seven walks for the game. Muzio stole two bases. Unicorns stole four bases in the game.
