Mammoths Hold Off Late Hoppers Rally for 4-2 Victory
UTICA, Mich. – The Westside Woolly Mammoths (8-2) used a 12-hit offensive attack and strong pitching to earn a 4-2 win over the Eastside Diamond Hoppers (1-9) on Saturday evening during game one at UWM Field.
The Mammoths wasted little time getting on the board, scoring twice in the opening inning before adding another run in the third to build an early 3-0 lead. They added an insurance run in the sixth inning that proved to be the difference.
Tommy Stevenson led the offensive charge, going 2-for-3 with a home run and an RBI. Kyle Revere also went deep, finishing with a solo home run and an RBI, while Caleb Marmo, Chase Jans, Dante Morton, and Brendan Hillis each collected two hits in the victory. The Mammoths finished with 12 hits and scored all four runs without drawing a walk.
On the mound, Reilly Shafer was dominant through 5.2 innings, allowing just three hits and two earned runs while striking out two to earn the win. David Craig recorded the final out of the game to secure the victory.
The Hoppers threatened in the sixth inning when Kevon Jackson doubled home a run and David Kedrow added an RBI groundout to cut the deficit to 4-2. However, the comeback effort fell short as Mammoths pitching closed the door.
