Unicorns Take Game One, 5-4, Over Mammoths
UTICA, Mich. – The Utica Unicorns (16-14) defeated the Westside Woolly Mammoths (15-10) in a back-and-forth game, with a final score of 5-4 in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader at Jimmy John’s Field.
After a hitless first inning for both squads, the Unicorns tallied three hits in the second inning, one of which, an RBI single from Tyler Shinn, that gave the Unicorns the early 1-0 lead.
Cordell Dunn Jr. hit his second home run of the season at the bottom of the second, with a three-run bomb to left field to take the lead from the Unicorns.
In the third, Utica’s Cam Farrar hit a double, then scored a run after Andre Demetral walked into loaded bases, bringing the game to within one run. Westside would strike back, also scoring in the third.
Utica’s Jose Aquino and Austin Ochoa earned RBIs in the 4th, bringing the score to 5-4, and giving the lead back to the Unicorns. Westside would be unable to rally back, and the Unicorns would escape a close game, ending on a great double play to retire the final inning.
