UTICA, Mich. – The Westside Woolly Mammoths (23-16) scored five runs in the top of the ninth inning, highlighted by a go-ahead grand slam from Jordan Viars, to rally past the Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers (21-18), 7-4, Friday night at UWM Field. The Mammoths entered the final inning trailing 4-2 before their late offensive surge flipped the game.
Westside jumped out to an early 2-0 advantage in the first inning. The Beavers began chipping away in the third before taking control with two runs in the fifth. Matt Piotrowski delivered an RBI double as part of the rally, and Birmingham eventually carried a 4-2 advantage into the ninth inning.
Birmingham’s offense collected 10 hits on the night, led by Chase Rodriguez, who went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Piotrowski finished 2-for-5 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while David Coppedge and Tommy Barth each drove in a run.
The game changed dramatically in the ninth. Westside loaded the bases before Dalton Pearson brought home a run, cutting Birmingham’s lead to one. Viars then delivered the biggest swing of the night, launching a grand slam for his eighth home run of the season. The blast gave Viars four RBI and suddenly put the Mammoths in front, 7-4.
