Unicorns Hold Off Hoppers 10-7 in High-Scoring Battle

UTICA, Mich. – The Utica Unicorns (8-5) built an early lead and held on late to defeat the Eastside Diamond Hoppers (1-12), 10-7, on Saturday evening during game one at UWM Field.

The Unicorns’ offense came out swinging, scoring in five of six innings and collecting 12 hits on the night. Utica jumped out to a 5-1 lead through two innings before adding two more runs in the third and another in the fourth to take control of the game.

Zach Bauers paced the Unicorns’ attack with a 3-for-4 performance, scoring twice and driving in two runs. Alex Harrell added two hits and scored twice, while Joey Winters finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Ryan Enos reached base three times, scored once, drove in a run, and added a double.

Cecil Lofton launched a solo home run and finishing with two runs driven in.

The Hoppers battled back throughout the game and cut into the deficit with a four-run fifth inning. Justin Johnson and Jordan Malott each connected for home runs, while Malott drove in four runs to lead the Hoppers offensively. David Kedrow collected three hits and scored twice in the loss.

On the mound, Nick Cosentino earned the win for the Unicorns after working four innings and striking out three. Despite allowing six runs, Cosentino helped keep the Unicorns in front long enough for the offense to build its lead. Jacob Newman and Garrett Harker combined to close out the final two innings, with Harker tossing a scoreless sixth to secure the victory.
