May 31st, 2025
UTICA, Mich. – The Westside Woolly Mammoths (2-5) and Utica Unicorns (5-3) each picked up a win during Saturday’s doubleheader at Jimmy John’s Field. In a pair of tightly contested games, the Mammoths edged the Unicorns 5–4 in the opener, while the home team bounced back with a 4–2 victory in Game 2.
Game 1: Mammoths 5, Unicorns 4
The Mammoths took the first game of the doubleheader behind a powerful second-inning surge and strong bullpen work.
Catcher Hank Dodson delivered the big blow with a three-run homer to left field, capping a four-run frame that put the Mammoths on top early. Cal Bocchino added an insurance RBI double in the sixth that proved to be the difference.
Right-hander Dillon Chapa held the Unicorns to one run over three innings before handing the ball to Brendan Beaver, who allowed three runs (two earned) over two innings to earn the win. Johnny Czeslawski shut the door with a scoreless sixth to record the save.
The Unicorns mounted a comeback in the fourth, fueled by a two-RBI single from Luis Lopez, but left the tying run stranded in the final inning. Reliever Bruce Yamamoto was charged with the loss after giving up the go-ahead run in the sixth.
Game 2: Unicorns 4, Mammoths 2
The Unicorns responded in Game 2 with a 4–2 win, using a pair of fifth-inning runs and dominant bullpen work to secure the split.
After both teams traded two-run first innings, the game remained deadlocked until Austin Ochoa drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the fifth. Moments later, Jude Drzemiecki added an RBI double to extend the lead.
The Mammoths were limited to just three hits in the contest, with 12 strikeouts and six runners left on base. They scored both runs in the first, taking advantage of a throwing error and back-to-back wild pitches, but were unable to capitalize further.
Reliever Nick Cosentino earned the win with two shutout innings, while Ethan Cetton recorded the save. Miquel Villafane took the loss for the Mammoths.
