Mammoths Defeat Beavers, 3-2
UTICA, Mich. – The Westside Woolly Mammoths (24-16) erased an early deficit with runs in three consecutive innings to defeat the Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers (21-19), 3-2, Sunday afternoon at UWM Field. Both teams finished with six hits and played error-free baseball.
Birmingham wasted no time getting on the board, as Chase Rodriguez led off the game with a solo home run, his fifth of the season, to give the Beavers a 1-0 advantage. The Beavers added another run in the fourth to extend their lead to 2-0. Rodriguez finished 1-for-4 with the home run, while Derek Gellos went 2-for-4 with a double.
The Mammoths began their comeback in the bottom of the fourth, cutting the deficit to 2-1. Westside tied the game in the fifth before pushing across another run in the sixth to take its first lead of the afternoon, 3-2. Jordan Viars helped lead the Mammoths offensively, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and an RBI, while Kyle Revere finished 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and a stolen base. Viars and Matt McGann were credited with RBIs for Westside.
From there, the Mammoths’ bullpen protected the one-run advantage. Ray Euson earned the win, allowing one run on just one hit over three innings while striking out two. Carew and Craig combined to get through the seventh before Gavin Brasosky worked the eighth inning to earn the save, allowing two hits but keeping Birmingham off the scoreboard.
For Birmingham, Munguia allowed two runs on five hits while striking out four over four innings. Ethan Glassman was charged with the loss despite allowing just one hit and an unearned run over 2.2 innings, striking out three.
Westside’s pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts, and the Mammoths completed the comeback without hitting a home run, securing the 3-2 victory over the Beavers.
