
Beavers Claim Victory Over Unicorns, Advance to Semifinals
UTICA, Mich. – The Birmingham Bloomfield Beavers (18-26, 1-0) opened their playoff run with a decisive 5-2 victory over the Utica Unicorns (22-22, 0-1) on Thursday night at Jimmy John’s Field. Behind solid starting pitching and a balanced offensive attack, the Beavers set the tone in the postseason matchup.
The Beavers struck early with a run in the first inning and never looked back, adding insurance late with a pair of runs in the ninth. Shortstop Ben Wilcoxson led the way at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a run scored and a stolen base. Nate Mensik and Matt Piotrowski both delivered home runs, with Piotrowski driving in two runs to extend the Beavers’ lead. Outfielder Pablo Ruiz also chipped in with two hits, an RBI, and a stolen base.
On the mound, Dyson Johnson earned the win with a strong 7-inning outing, allowing just four hits and one run while striking out four. The Beavers’ bullpen closed the door, with Dominic Hann and Noah Miller combining to secure the final six outs.
The Unicorns threatened with a solo home run from Ryan Enos and a ninth-inning RBI from Andrew Valdez, but stranded nine runners on base throughout the night.
With the victory, the Beavers advance in the postseason and continue their pursuit of another USPBL championship.
