Westside Blanks Utica, 3-0, to Split Saturday Doubleheader

UTICA, Mich. – The Westside Woolly Mammoths (20-14) bounced back in game two of Saturday’s doubleheader, shutting out the Utica Unicorns (21-14) 3-0 at UWM Field to earn a split on the night.
After three scoreless innings, Westside broke through with all three of its runs in the bottom of the fourth. Tommy Stevenson delivered the biggest hit of the game, driving a two-out, two-run double to give the Mammoths the lead. Kyle Revere added an RBI as Westside turned three hits into all the offense it would need.
The Mammoths’ pitching staff took care of the rest. Conor Gausselin worked three scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out one before turning the game over to the bullpen. David Craig earned the win with two perfect innings and three strikeouts, while Gavin Brasosky picked up the save with a scoreless sixth. Together, the trio held Utica to five hits and struck out five.
Rafael Jackson III led the Unicorns offensively, finishing 2-for-3, while Alex Harrell, Chris Schoeller Jr. and Logan Sanders each added a hit. Utica put runners on base throughout the contest but stranded eight and was unable to push a run across.
Utica starter Edrian Rangel was strong through 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out four. The Unicorns’ pitching staff held Westside to only three hits overall, but the Mammoths’ three-run fourth proved to be the difference.
