Mammoths Take Game One, 4-1, Over Unicorns

UTICA, Mich. – The Utica Unicorns (4-3) dropped a 4-1 decision to the Westside Woolly Mammoths (6-1) during game one of Saturday night’s doubleheader at UWM Field.
The Unicorns struck first in the opening inning when Thomas Collins II led off with a single and eventually came around to score on an RBI single from Alex Harrell, giving Utica an early 1-0 advantage.
The Mammoths answered immediately, plating two runs in the bottom of the first before adding two more in the third inning to take a 4-1 lead.
Utica collected four hits on the night, with Rafael Jackson, Thomas Collins, Alex Harrell, and Ryan Enos each recording a hit. Harrell drove in the Unicorns’ lone run while also reaching base twice. Jackson added a single and Collins scored the team’s only run.
On the mound, Jacob Newman struck out five over 2.1 innings before Dillon Fischer settled things down with 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, allowing just two hits while striking out three.
The Unicorns had opportunities throughout the game, drawing four walks and putting multiple runners on base, but were unable to break through against the Mammoths’ bullpen. Mammoths pitchers combined to strike out six and held Utica scoreless over the final five innings.
The Mammoths were led offensively by Caleb Marmo, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Matt McGann contributed a double and an RBI in the victory.
