Unicorns Rally Late to Top Mammoths, 5–1
July 18th, 2025
UTICA, Mich. – A three-run eighth inning helped the Utica Unicorns (14-11) pull away from the Westside Woolly Mammoths (10-17) in a 5–1 victory on Friday night at Jimmy John’s Field in front of a sold-out crowd.
After five scoreless innings, both teams broke through in the sixth. The Mammoths got on the board first when Anthony Sharkas singled, eventually scoring on a defensive miscue after advancing on a balk and error. But the Unicorns responded with two runs of their own in the bottom half, fueled by walks and a pair of wild pitches.
Jared Weber delivered the game’s biggest blow in the eighth, roping a two-run double to right-center to stretch the Unicorns’ lead to 4–1. Jason Story followed with an RBI single to cap off the scoring.
On the mound, Unicorns starter Nick Cosentino threw five hitless innings, striking out three. Matt Colucci picked up the win in relief, allowing just one unearned run over three innings while adding a pair of strikeouts. Ryan Peters closed out the ninth with a perfect frame.
Westside’s Dillon Chapa was sharp in his start, striking out nine over five hitless innings before the bullpen faltered late.
