Unicorns Stay Hot with 6-4 Win Over Woolly Mammoths
UTICA, Mich. – Jimmy Latona went 3-for-4 with one RBI and Austin Maltby finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Utica Unicorns (8-2) to a 6-4 victory over the Westside Woolly Mammoths (2-8) on Friday night in front of a lively Jimmy John’s Field crowd.
Coleman Poje was perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with one walk, run scored and RBI. Right-handed pitcher Spencer Stockton (2-1) picked up his second win of the season, throwing 7.0 innings, scattering five hits, four runs, one earned run and struck out six.
Sonny Cortez continued to swing a hot bat for the Woolly Mammoths, going 2-for-4 with one RBI. He leads the USPBL in batting average and extended his hitting streak to seven games.
The Unicorns will take on the Eastside Diamond Hoppers (5-3) on Saturday night at Jimmy John’s Field. The pitching match-up includes two of the top prospects in the league as Donald Goodson (1-0) and Luis Contreras (2-1) face off. Goodson leads the league by holding opponents to a .148 batting average and Contreras leads the USPBL with 27 strikeouts.
