Bottom Of The Lineup Carries Beavers Past Unicorns

UTICA, Mich. – The bottom of the lineup helped Beavers capture a 6-2 victory over Unicorns on Saturday at Jimmy Johns Field, 7171 Auburn Rd Utica MI 48304. Jackson Romero, Nate Mensik, and Raul Guillermo combined for five of the team’s 10 hits in the victory. They scored three runs and drove in three.

Beavers got on the board in the first inning after Ryan Maka hit into a double play, but one run scored.

Jared Weber singled to center field, which helped Unicorns tie the game at one in the bottom of the first.

In the top of the second, Beavers broke up the tie when Guillermo doubled, scoring one run. Then a single by Mensik followed to extend the lead to 3-1.

Beavers added to their early lead in the top of the third inning after Pablo Ruiz doubled down the left field line, and Tyler Shinn grounded out, each scoring one run.

Unicorns scored one run in the bottom of the fourth on a solo home run to center field by Weber.

Sidney Ferry earned the win for Beavers. The pitcher allowed two hits and one run over two innings, striking out one and walking none. Adam Berghorst took the loss for Unicorns. The pitcher went three and one-third innings, allowing six runs (four earned) on eight hits, striking out two and walking none. Choyce Diffey III stepped on the mound first for Beavers. The starting pitcher surrendered two hits and one run over two innings, striking out two and walking none. Dominic Hann threw two innings of zero-run ball for Beavers in relief. The righty gave up one hit, striking out two and walking one.

Beavers amassed 10 hits in the game. Mensik led Beavers with two runs batted in from the number nine spot in the lineup. The outfielder went 2-for-3 on the day. Ruiz, Romero, Mensik, and Ben Wilcoxson each collected two hits for Beavers. Beavers were sure-handed and didn’t commit a single error. Shinn made the most plays with five.

Weber drove the middle of the lineup, leading Unicorns with two runs batted in. The right-handed hitter went 2-for-2 on the day. Weber stole two bases. Unicorns turned one double play in the game.
