UTICA — The Birmingham-Bloomfield Beavers finished the USPBL’s inaugural regular season with a bang, coasting to an 18-1 rout over the Utica Unicorns on Thursday night.

The Beavers finished 26-22 on the year, one game better than the 25-23 Eastside Diamond Hoppers and five better than the 21-27 Unicorns.

“It means the world,” said Beavers third baseman Dan Kennon when asked of the importance of finishing in first place. “We just kept grinding through it and knew it was going to pay off.”

Kennon went 2-for-5 in Thursday’s blowout, scoring three runs, notching three RBIs and also drawing a walk.

“It was so exciting,” said Kennon. “From the first out to the last, we were excited to get that last out and get it over with.”

The direction in which the game was headed became clear early on. If a 5-0 lead after two innings wasn’t enough, the Beavers busted it open by tacking on six more runs in the third.

Miles Williams was a big part of the offensive outburst, going 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI.

“We started off slow, got really hot in the middle of the season and then we got a little slow again,” said Williams. “But taking momentum into the playoffs is always great”

After a shaky final month of the season, the Beavers finished the regular season by winning their last three games, securing first place and a playoff bye.

After Friday night’s All Star Game, the Unicorns and Diamond Hoppers will square off Saturday at 7:25pm in the USPBL’s first-ever playoff game.

The winner will face the Beavers on Sunday at 2pm for the league championship.
